Overview of UTI research

A review of many recent studies treatment for chronic UTI came to these interesting conclusions:

- Topical estrogen prevented recurrence, apparently by altering flora - Oral probiotic supplementation, with Lactobacillus rhamnosus and lactobacillus reuteri reduced recurrence to half over the following year - Prophylactic antibiotics also reduced the likelihood to half, but with some degree of antibiotic resistance - Cranberry extract needs more research to understand the mechanism, and reduces recurrence less than prophylactic antibiotics, but again without the side effect of antibiotic resistance - D-mannose reduces recurrence by 75% compared with placebo - Vitamin C did not appear to prevent a recurrence, though the dose tested was low - Acupuncture, altering gut flora, and vaccines show some promise
